100 Years of the Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin

Alice Salomon

A good 100 years!

In 2008 the Alice Salomon Hochschule University of Applied Sciences of Berlin looks back on a century of qualified educational work. The core of the celebrations is a two-day anniversary event. They will also include the prize-giving of the Alice Salomon Award, which distinguishes outstanding commitment to women’s and human rights.

The ceremony

The anniversary celebrations begin on 23rd October 2008, with a ceremony in the ASFH main lecture hall. Afterwards a bus tour of the city will take guests to the historical social work and training sites – a visit to the red town hall is planned, for example, where the girls’ and women’s social aid work groups were founded, as is a tour of the first women’s workers’ clubs and other highly significant places. From Hellersdorf the tour goes on to Schöneberg, to the Pestalozzi-Fröbel-Haus, where the Alice Salomon College was founded. Here, the Alice Salomon Award will be given for the third time. Last but not least, a reception will provide all the visitors with the opportunity of meeting old acquaintances and striking up new ones.

Open college

On 24th October, a higher education symposium will begin in the ASFH. Afterwards, the results of the work of individual students or seminars can be presented within the framework of the “open college”. Likewise the different ASFH courses and institutions, such as the AStA (General Students’ Committee), the library, the archives, the barrier removal committee, the European Summer School and the multiple students’ initiatives may also be presented. It is envisaged that both current and former students and lecturers will take part in the festivities. The aim of the open college is to offer the different groups a platform so that they participate with their ideas and creativity.

Creative ideas are welcome

The preparations for the 100th Anniversary are complete, People from Japan, USA, Denmark, Israel and other parts of the world have expressed an interest in taking part in the ASFH celebrations. We have received particularly positive feedback from the broader Alice Salomon family circle, and from former students. The aim of the anniversary events is to present the ASFH in all its diversity and commitment, so that the college’s 100th birthday shines out as a splendid occasion, both in the immediate surroundings and further afield.
