The Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin (ASH Berlin) is a research-focused and practice-orientated university of applied sciences that combines interdisciplinary study programmes and international contacts to meet current challenges in educational policy.
In 2008 the Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin celebrates it's 100th anniversary. The ASH Berlin is closely connected with the development of modern professional social work and life’s work of Alice Salomon. The institution’s roots extend back to the 19th century when systematic training in social work in Germany began.
In 1908 Alice Salomon (1872-1948) founded the two-year, interconfessional „Soziale Frauenschule“ (Social Women’s School) in Berlin Schöneberg, having initially started with one-year social-work courses. Interdisciplinarity, a close link between theory and practice and an international orientation remain the most important principles of the training to the present day. The first school for social work became a model for the foundation of other schools and influenced the development of social work in Germany.
In 1933, with the beginning of the Nazi dictatorship, the „Social Women’s School“ dismissed its Jewish members and renounced its emancipatory focus on social justice. Alice Salomon was expelled from Germany in 1937.
After liberation from the Nazi dictatorship the school resumed its work in June 1945, taking its lead from the training of the 1920s. Supported by German émigrés, it was orientated towards democratic American models.
In the course of the educational reforms at the end of the 1960s, the school was expanded in 1971 to become the „University for Applied Sciences for Social Work and Social Education“ via the integration of the catholic „Helene-Weber-Akademie“ (Helene Weber Academy) and the „Seminar der Arbeiterwohlfahrt“ (Seminary of Workers’ Welfare). Since 1991 the university of applied sciences has borne the name of Alice Salomon. In the course of the development of new educational concepts and structures, a second study programme in „Social Care/Social Care Management“ was set up in 1994. In 1999 the first Masters programme „Intercultural Conflict Management“ was establi-shed, and 2004 saw the first Bachelors programmes „Early Childhood Education“ and „Physiotherapy/Ergotherapy“. In 1998 the ASFH moved to newly built premises in the Berlin district of Hellersdorf. The Alice Salomon Archive was opened in 2001 in historical premises in Schöneberg and the „Alice Salomon Award“ was awarded for the first time.
