Deutsch als Fremdsprache / German as a Foreign Language

If you are planning to study at the ASH and German is not your native language, we offer elementary and intermediate level classes in German (Deutsch als Fremdsprache— DaF) to help you make the most of your experience.  Classes are small and tailored to the needs of international students.

Knowledge of German also opens new academic and professional perspectives. Students who would like to extend their course of studies in Germany or intend to apply for regular admission and matriculation to a German university must submit certification of sufficient proficiency in the German language (TestDaF). Our German courses are first steps toward reaching these goals.

The focus of our elementary and intermediate German classes is on listening comprehension, oral production, and grammatical structures. Using model dialogues, role-playing and target vocabulary, you will practise German in typical day-to-day situations.

Intensive Course

In preparation for the winter semester, we offer a two-week intensive (60-hour) German course (September 17th-28th 2012) during which our incoming international students have the opportunity to become acquainted with the university and the city of Berlin.

The aim of the course is to enable the participants to communicate in everyday situations and familiarize them with  grammatical structures (level A1.1) With the help of model dialogues and role-playing, along with the target vocabulary, we deal with topics and situations which new exchange students  often come across (shopping, public transport, finding your way around the city, etc), for which pronunciation and listening comprehension is of particular importance. In conjunction with the development of communicative skills we intend to cover fundamental grammatical structures: question forms, basic syntax, the conjugation of regular and irregular verbs, the accusative case and some modal verbs.

Classes meet for six hours everyday (Monday-Friday). Participation in the course requires no prior knowledge of this grammar. The students do not need a textbook. This class is awarded with five academic credit points (ECTS) for exchange students.

Please contact Ms Frances Kregler  [kregler(at)ash-berlin.eu] if you would like to attend this course.

Semester Course

This course resumes where the preceding intensive course left off. The goal is to complete level A1. Based on the needs of the participants we will deal with topics of the every day life and the life at the university. Apart from vocabulary exercises and the development of communicative abilities in the everyday life we will focus on of the appropriate grammar. The course addresses itself to participants with previous knowledge (A1/1). The students do not need a textbook. These two-hour classes are merited with three credit points (ECTS) for international students.  Students who are  matriculated at the ASH may attend in our German classes, but are not qualified to earn ECTS.
