Project duration: 01/04/2016 - 31/05/2016

Principal investigator: Prof. Dr. Theda Borde

Project staff: Dr. Min-Sung Kim

Abstract:
Safeguarding consumer protection for immigrants and refugees poses a challenge. Media reports, for example, reveal that new immigrants are being taken advantage of (for example with mobile phone plans). The aim of the project is to clarify areas of action in which the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection (BMJV) can provide support around consumer protection for refugees and migrants.

This study was a quantitative study. First an online survey of social workers was conducted, and then face to face interviews of refugees were carried out (in several federal states of Germany).
The analysis was intended to clarify the following: the experience of migrants and refugees with consumer traps; which contracts and transactions most affect this group; what type of consumer information is needed in which sectors and how to strengthen consumer protection for refugees and migrants.

Funding: Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection
