You can return your books at the return machine in the entrance area of the university during the opening hours of the university (Mon - Fri: 7 am - 7 pm, no appointment booking and no Corona test required).
Members of all universities in Berlin: entry to the library only after previous appointment booking.
In addition proof that your last required vaccination with an EU-approved vaccine was at least 14 days ago (cf. SARS-CoV-2 infection control regulation) is required OR a current negative Corona test result (self-tests are not accepted) OR alternatively, you may submit a certificate of recovery (positive PCR test result at least 28 days and no more than 6 months ago). A test center inside the ASH (accessible from the outside) is open Monday - Friday from 8:00 - 16:00 until further notice. Tests are only performed there for persons who have not (yet) been vaccinated. Testing there is free of charge for university members of ASH Berlin.
Please bring a proof of affiliation with a Berlin university. Wearing a medical mask and compliance with hygiene and protective measures required.
Members without membership of a university in Berlin: No access to the library possible. Exceptions: children of parents belonging to a Berlin university and assistants accompanying members of a Berlin university. In both cases, an appointment booking is also required for the accompanying person.
Please come to the library only if you are in good health! Persons with symptoms that could be related to a COVID-19 disease may not be granted access to the library.

You can return your books at the return machine in the entrance area of the university. The university opening hours are from 7 am till 7 pm.
Members of all universities in Berlin: Until further notice, the library can only be used by members of a university in Berlin. Please provide proof of membership of one of Berlin's universities to the gatekeeper without being asked. Students must show their student ID card. Employees of a university or college of higher education should present their identification document. In addition, due to the SARS-CoV-2 infection protection ordinance, each user must also fill out a slip of paper with the following data at the gatekeeper's office: First and last name, university, type of university affiliation, e-mail address, telephone number, date and signature.

Non-university members: Users who do not belong to a Berlin university are unfortunately not allowed to use the library during the restricted opening hours (Exceptions: children of parents belonging to a Berlin university and assistants accompanying members of a Berlin university. In both cases, an appointment booking is also required for the accompanying person.) It is therefore not possible to use and borrow books on site. Books that have already been borrowed can be returned at the automatic return machine in the entrance of the university or sent back by mail.
A maximum of 40 users may be in the library at the same time. In order to ensure a controlled course of library use and thus the observance of appropriate hygiene measures, you must book an appointment for your visit to the library in advance. This is done via a booking system. You have the choice between an appointment for borrowing and short-term printing/scanning or for the use of a workstation. Please come individually to the date you have booked, not in groups. Please come no more than 5 minutes before your appointment, as this avoids overlapping with previous users. Every user who has booked an appointment exclusively for borrowing and short-term printing and scanning may stay in the library for 50 minutes. Users with a workstation booking are allowed to stay in the library according to the timeslots specified for them.

Every user who has booked an appointment exclusively for borrowing and short-term printing and scanning may stay in the library for 50 minutes. Users with a workstation booking are allowed to stay in the library according to the timeslots specified for them. In advance a visit appointment has to be booked via our booking system.
During this time you have the opportunity to take books from the shelf and borrow them. We ask you to prepare your research from home. You can order and scan final papers, as well as journal volumes from the magazine. Long-term use/work at workstations is only possible after booking an appropriate appointment and at the designated places.
The use of audio-visual media on site or consultations at the circulation desk are not possible. Please leave the university after you have borrowed your books from the library. A longer stay at the university is not permitted.
Access to the library is via the inner courtyard (after showing your university membership to the gatekeeper).
When waiting before and when entering the library, please pay attention to the markings to keep your distance and the attached signs.
To get to the Galarie / 1st floor of the library, please use the stairs (only one person at a time). To get from the Galarie / 1st floor to the ground floor, please use the elevator (only one person at a time).

Please exit the library through the security gate (original entrance).
Contrary to the usual rule, bags/rucksacks may be taken along for the period of library use, since the lockers (neither inside nor outside the library) may not be used for hygienic reasons. For the transport of books you would like to borrow, please bring your own bags. Plastic bags are also available. The baskets otherwise available may not be used.

Use of the reading room is only permitted at the designated places. Please note that appointments must be booked for these places (except for the additional printer/scanner place for short-term printing/scanning).
Additionally, a book scanner is available in the reading room.
Use of the journals and books placed in the reading room is permitted.
During the time of restricted library opening, some computer workstations are available in the reading room as well as workstations without computers on the mezzanine floor (at signature group WI-S). Longer work is only possible at these designated workstations and after prior appointment booking in predefined timeslots.
Furthermore, there is another printer/scanner station in the reading room for short-term printing/scanning (without appointment booking).
At two research computers at the end of the first floor and the mezzanine floor there is also the possibility of short-term literature research (without appointment booking).
Further workstations are NOT available.
Short-term printing, copying and scanning is possible at an appropriately marked place in the reading room.
For longer work and printing, there are also some marked computer workstations in the reading room. An appointment must be booked to use these workstations.
In addition, there is a book scanner in the reading room for free use.
Registration in the library is only possible online. Write us an email to bibliothek@ ash-berlin.eu We will create a library account for you and activate your ASH-Camppuscard for library use (ASH students) or issue you a library card (teachers, researchers, administrative staff of ASH and external students), which you can pick up at the circulation desk during your first visit. Members of Berlin universities are allowed to use the library on site. Before borrowing books, first have your ASH-Campuscard activated or apply for a library card and then book an appointment for a visit. On-site registration is only possible in exceptional cases.
Registration of persons, who do not belong to a university is possible too, but the use of the library is very limited. See also: I'm not a member of a university, what are my options?
Books that you would like to borrow should be booked independently via the self-service check-out.
Users with special loan periods must borrow the books at the loan desk.
Books can only be returned via the return machine in the entrance of the university or by mail.
It is possible to order and use journal volumes, theses and magazine books from the magazine. Please order the corresponding journal volumes, theses and magazine books via your OPAC account one day before your visit.
There are some workstations available in the reading room. Longer work is only possible at these designated places and after prior appointment booking in predefined timeslots.
Books that you have reserved can be picked up at the lending desk on the day you visit the library.
Fees can currently only be paid by bank transfer. The account details of the library can be found on our contact page.
ASH students who require an Entlastungsvermerk should contact the library by email: bibliothek@ ash-berlin.eu
If there are no borrowed books and/or fees in your user account, we will send the Entlastungsvermerk by email to the examination/registration office upon request.
If you have returned books that are still on loan at the return machine, you do not need to come back to the library again to receive the Entlastungsvermerk.
It is sufficient if you send us an e-mail. If you still have outstanding fees, proceed as described under : How do I pay my fees?
The library offers individual one-hour online research consultations for members of the ASH's university staff, for individuals and with special consideration of their topic.
The library can offer online trainings via zoom for members of the ASH on the following topics:
- Library introduction and OPAC training
- Introduction to systematic literature research
- Introduction to the literature management program "Citavi
The online training courses can be booked by teachers via e-mail to schulungen.bibliothek@ ash-berlin.eu
An appointment will be arranged. The duration of the online trainings depends on the type of training and the previous content agreements with the instructors.
Since the health of users and employees should be guaranteed by as little contact as possible, the following services cannot be offered at the moment:

In urgent cases, we can search out the desired media for you. Please send us an e-mail atbibliothek@ ash-berlin.euwith the following information: the required books with their respective shelf marks, as well as the date and time of pick-up.
Please limit the number of books to a maximum of 10 books.
The books will be added to your account and stored for pickup at the gatehouse.
