Social work and sociology share quite a lot. Both are concerned with social problems, crises, and the transformation of society as awhole. Sociology is regarded as a problem oriented science that enables us both, to reflect on social work and in social work as well. Sociology is far way offering technology like solutions for fixing any social problem a social worker will face. However, a sociological style to perceive and describe human behavior comprehends competences to understand profoundly how and why individuals act in their particular way. Practicing sociology you might discover resources and rules how individuals can shape their lives and identities.
The course covers following topics: 1) Social class/inequalities, 2) Gender, 3) Race/Ethnicity, 4) Poverty/Exclusion, 5) Later life, 6) Health, 7) DisAbility, 8) Crime, 9) Intimacies/Relationships 10) Communities/social capital
Soziale Arbeit und Soziologie haben Einiges gemeinsam. Beide sind mit sozialen Problemen, Krisen beschäftigt und der Frage, wie die Gesellschaft transformiert werden kann. Soziologie versteht sich als eine problemorientierte Wissenschaft, die uns ermöglicht, Soziale Arbeit sowohl in ihrem gesellschaftlichen Kontext, als auch von innen – in ihrer Arbeitsweise - zu reflektieren. Soziologie liefert gewiss keinen Masterplan, wie die gesellschaftlichen Probleme zu lösen. Allerdings kann die soziologische Wahrnehmungsweise dazu beitragen, zu verstehen, wie und warum Menschen auf ganz bestimmte Weise handeln. Beim soziologischen Forschungsprozess können wir Regeln und Ressourcen entdecken, auf die Individuen in ihrem Alltag, ihrer Lebensführung und ihrer Identitätsbildung zurückgreifen.
The course will be held bi-lingual. While discussing in English it will be switched into German just as problems may occur to demand comments and explanations in German (or other languages, Spain, Arabic, whatever). Thus, the seminar is recommended for World and Erasmus Students.
Im Kurs wird bilingual gearbeitet. Die meisten Diskussionen werden im nicht fehlerfreien Englisch geführt. Immer dann, wenn deutsche Kommentare etc. gewünscht werden, kann die Sprache gewechselt und eine Übersetzung angefordert werden. Das Seminar ist insbesondere für Erasmus- und Welt-Student*innen geeignet.
