In contrast to general WHO policies and more specific discourses in other European countries, social inequities in health is a fairly new topic on the German political agenda. The famous "Black report", for instance, has triggered an ongoing discussion in Great Britain in the 1980s already. The WHO Regional Office for Europe summarized "The concepts and principles of equity and health" in 1990 already and the "European strategies for tackling social inequities in health" in 2006. Like the WHO, several research projects that have compiled evidence of social inequities in the health sector throughout Europe, highlight the need for action in health promotion in their studies. In this seminar, we will analyse these research results to gain a precise picture of the nature and the extent of social inequities in health issues within Europe. Moreover, we will thoroughly discuss evaluations of political actions which were to "tackle" these inequities and focus on the role of Social Work in these particular fields. Basic theoretical concepts of the sociology of health and illness will be covered in this seminar, and you will obtain an impression of the work within the public health sector. |
