Abstract:
The project is based on the assumption that quality and efficiency improvements can be achieved regarding outpatient care for patients with cancer in Berlin.

Although the density of care in rural regions is likely to be lower than in urban areas, oncological care could be more structured and less competitive in rural areas, so that exemplary care structures may exist which could be used to inform cancer care in Berlin.

Using routine data from two major statutory health insurance (SHI) providers (The AOK Nordost including Berlin, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, as well as the IKK Brandenburg – Berlin), we will examine in what ways care for cancer patients in rural and urban areas is put into effect.

The evaluation will take into consideration the location of care (surgeries, oncological centres, outpatient clinics, hospitals etc.), types of therapy and nursing treatment of the patient, as well as considering inpatient emergency admissions and cases of those patients not fit enough to work. Recommendations for oncological care in Berlin will be made to the statutory health insurance providers.
