University Life Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin celebrates topping-out ceremony for the new extension building

"The years of effort are now becoming clearly visible."

Richtkrone schwebt in der Luft
Ten storeys up: The topping-out crown hovers in the air.

The topping-out ceremony for the new university building was celebrated today at Kokoschkaplatz in Marzahn-Hellersdorf. Within sight of the main building of the university, an extension with 5 floors and a characteristically curved high-rise tower with 10 floors and a height of 39 meters is being built.

In the presence of the Senator for Urban Development, Building and Housing Andreas Geisel, the Senator for Science, Health, Care and Equality Ulrike Gote, the Rector of the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences Berlin Prof. Dr. Bettina Völter, the architect Bruno Vennes and many others involved in the construction, the topping-out wreath was raised into the air.

Andreas Geisel, Senator for Urban Development, Construction and Housing: "I am sure that the namesake Alice Salomon would look at this building with satisfaction. It creates space for teachers and learners who are committed to our society in the spirit of Alice Salomon. Here in Marzahn-Hellersdorf, young people are trained in the important professions of social work, health, and childhood education. For them, we are building a modern and contemporary environment that makes challenging study possible."

Ulrike Gote, Senator for Science, Health and Care: "The Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences Berlin stands for the strengthening of science and research in the important fields of social work, health, upbringing and education. By training professionals in these disciplines, ASH Berlin makes a fundamental contribution to the consolidation and further development of a resilient and sustainable society. The new building will be a place where people pass on Alice Solomon's humanitarian and caring-based work. The extension will once again underscore the beacon character of Germany's largest state-run SAGE university."

With approximately 42,500m3  of space, seminar rooms, movement and physical therapy rooms, a children's area, skills labs, offices and, as a special feature on the 10th floor, a theater seminar room will complement the existing space. A cafeteria with a corresponding production kitchen will move into the first floor. The space available will allow use for up to 1,700 students as well as 100 teaching, research and administrative staff.

Prof. Dr. Bettina Völter, Rector of ASH Berlin: "We are very pleased about this further milestone on the way to the opening of the extension building. The years of effort to create a building that meets the increased demands of teaching and research in the SAGE subjects, as well as the enormous growth of the university, are now clearly visible. We thank the neighbors for their forbearance and patience, as well as everyone who has worked so diligently to prepare and implement the project - from the students, faculty and staff who developed space concepts and ideas, to the planners and workers who made the visions a reality, and whom we especially celebrate today. Every day, we watch with curiosity and anticipation as the SAGE campus in Marzahn-Hellersdorf takes shape, and we can't wait to see this building come alive with science that directly addresses the current issues and problems of our society."

The clearly structured structure is reminiscent of Berlin's Wilhelminian commercial buildings.

With large-format windows and a pillar-like structure, the building's use as a university is clearly visible on the outside. The interior is dominated by simple and clear circulation with numerous communication points as self-study areas.

Accessibility requirements were implemented - also through the involvement of the student representatives for the severely disabled - as was a sustainable and climate-friendly construction method. The energy concept for the entire building allows resource- and energy-saving building operation. A photovoltaic system is to be installed on part of the roof.

The generous open spaces surround the new building and consist of a break yard, the tree grove and a roof garden.

The overall measure consists of three simultaneously realized construction phases with a total volume of € 39.7 million. A partial amount of €11.8 million is being financed from funds provided by the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences Berlin.

Completion of the new addition is scheduled for the 3rd quarter of 2024.
