Researching together for a strong democracy and fair education

ASH Berlin launches BMFTR-funded project "Transdisciplinary Democracy and Education Research" with a funding volume of around 2.78 million euros

The new research project "Transdisciplinary Democracy and Education Research" was launched at Alice Salomon University (ASH) Berlin at the beginning of January. The aim of the project is to further develop democratic educational processes and inclusive school and all-day structures in a practical, participatory and research-based manner, thereby making education fairer.

The project is jointly led by Prof. Dr. Michael Brodowski and Prof. Dr. Heinz Stapf-Finé. It is set to run for four years until the end of 2029.

In a total of six transdisciplinary research workshops, students of social work, childhood education and primary school teaching (in cooperation with Freie Universität Berlin) will work together with academics and practice partners. Among other things, they are investigating educational processes with a focus on inclusive all-day schools and approaches to applied, research-based democracy development.

"In the research project, we will work on three levels: Firstly, we will investigate current challenges to inclusive all-day schools and the development of democracy in six research workshops. Secondly, in an accompanying study, we will investigate how the knowledge, attitudes and skills of students, graduates, researchers and practice partners change as a result of participating in the transdisciplinary research project. Thirdly, we are examining how the knowledge gained can have an impact and be used in schools, institutions and society," says Prof. Dr. Michael Brodowski, who teaches leadership and management of early childhood educational institutions at ASH Berlin.

Prof. Dr. Heinz Stapf-Finé adds: "We are particularly keen to promote young academics with this research project. We will therefore set up a doctoral college, offer advisory services for your own research and start-up ideas, develop a joint publication series with students and organize the annual student congress "Tag der Pädagog_innen"." Heinz Stapf-Finé is Professor of Social Policy at ASH Berlin.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) as part of the "HAW-Forschungsraum Qualifizierung" funding line. The funding volume amounts to around 2.78 million euros. Only 23 projects were selected nationwide - one of them at ASH Berlin.

With the new research space, ASH Berlin is making an important contribution to the further development of democratic educational processes and at the same time strengthening the link between research, teaching and practice.
