The ASH Campuscard

The Campuscard combines the ASH Berlin student ID card together with a MensaCard [student canteen card], VBB [Berlin-Brandenburg Transport Authority (Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg)] pass and library card into one. It retains all the functions of the individual components in full:

  • Proof of student status
  • Use as a VBB pass (even without personal ID, if the "Campuscard with photo" option has been selected)
  • Topping up the balance and paying at the canteen checkout
  • Borrowing media from the library
  • Use of the library lockers
  • In the future: Paying library fees at the self-checkout machines

Only the library number will be saved as personal information on the Campuscard. No other personal data is stored electronically.

How do I get the Campuscard?

Starting in the 2021 summer semester, the new Campuscard will be gradually introduced at ASH. You will be able to pick up your card after you have successfully enrolled/re-registrated for the new semester. Due to the pandemic, you currently have to book a pick-up date in the course catalogue; see above note!

After you have successfully enrolled, you will have access to the ASH Berlin course catalogue. First book a pick-up date for your Campuscard, as described in the instructions in Campuscard_en.pdf. Then also create a QR code there, which you can save on your mobile device or print out.

Come to ASH on the pick-up date you have chosen. After scanning the QR code on the automatic card issuing machine, you can decide whether to have the Campuscard made with or without a photo. In case you get a card without a photo, it will be necessary to always have a personal photo identification document available to use your semester pass. It takes about two minutes to make the Campuscard.

Afterwards, the Campuscard must be updated with the semester pass and validated by the automatic updater. This process must be done every semester to update the information on the Campuscard.

After successful re-registration, have your Campuscard overwritten with the data for the new semester on the automatic updater (if there are already two semesters on the card, then the new semester overwrites the oldest semester printed on the card).

Please refer to the FAQ list below for more information.

Frequently asked questions

  • Student ID card (with/without passport photo). A passport photo is optional on the Campuscard. You can also choose a card without a photo when it is issued. However, these cards must be accompanied by an official photo ID card for validity.
  • Semester pass
  • MensaCard of the studierendenWERK Berlin [Berlin Student Union] including an electronic wallet for all payment functions that can be made using the MensaCard
  • Library card

Please note:

After receiving the Campuscard, note down the studierendenWERK number that is on the back! If you lose your card, you will need this for reimbursement of your canteen balance on the Campuscard.

Compared to the old paper ID card, the new Campuscard is:

  • More convenient, since only one card is required for many functions
  • More durable
  • More secure against forgery

No personal data is stored on the chip other than the library number. The chip only contains an anonymous but unique identifier for the card. Use of the MensaCard is also anonymous.

Information is stored both visually and electronically on an RFID chip on the Campuscard. However, no data whatsoever is stored or processed on the RFID chip that would allow anyone possessing the card to draw conclusions about any person.

  • The electronic card does not contain any of the student's personal data.
  • The automatic machines call up all personal data online using a pseudonym, so there is no personal data on the automatic machines.
  • Photos are not saved on the automatic machine.
  • Communications are encrypted.

The automatic machines are located in Room 109 on the first floor.

All automatic machines are designed according to ISO 18040 and can therefore be operated by students with disabilities.

You can have your photo taken right on the automatic card issuing machine. These photos will not be saved and are only used once to make your Campuscard.

You need your personal QR code to use the automatic card issuing machine. You can get this via your account in the ASH Berlin course catalogue. Click on "My Functions", then on "Administration of study"and on "Campuscard QR Code".

Save the QR code on your mobile device or print it out. Scan the QR code on the automatic card issuing machine so that it will issue your Campuscard.

Please note:  You will only be able to see the QR Code after you have successfully enrolled/re-registrated for the new semester.

If you have any difficulties with making or validating the card on the automatic machine, please call the central telephone number of ASH IT Services, which you can find on the notice next to the automatic machine.

For any other technical problems, please contact us by email at campuscard@ avoid-unrequested-mailsash-berlin.eu.

The first copy of the Campuscard does not cost you anything. Subsequently updating the semester validity and printing the semester pass as necessary are also included in the re-registration fee or the payment of the semester pass price. The re-issue of the Campuscard due to changes in personal details (e.g. name changes) is also free of charge. If you lose your Campuscard, it is stolen from you or defective due to improper use/handling, you can request a replacement from the Student Service Centre (regular students) or International Office (exchange students) for a fee of 12.00 EUR.

If you are enrolled at two different universities, then you will only receive a Campuscard including a semester pass if you are a full-time student at ASH Berlin and have paid your semester fees to ASH Berlin.

If you are enrolled at two colleges or universities (double enrolment) and have paid your semester fees to the other institution, you will not receive a CampusCard from ASH Berlin.

Your Campuscard must be validated, i.e., updated, after it has been issued for the first time and before the start of each semester (after fulfilling the re-registration requirements). To do this, please go to the automatic validating machine.

For example, if you need a valid student ID card as proof or if you want to use your VBB semester pass, you have to update your campus card on site at one of the ASH Berlin automatic updaters. If you are abroad, please use the proof of enrolment available in the course catalogue (instead of the Campuscard).

If you already have a Campuscard, all you have to do is re-validate it on the automatic updater; i.e., have it updated. The card can be updated as soon as your re-registration has been successfully completed. You will be informed of this by email or you can check your current re-registration status at any time in the course catalogue/LSF.

No. Once you have issued a Campuscard, you can use it for the entire duration of your study programme at ASH Berlin. The card only needs to be re-validated, i.e. updated, once per semester. To do this, please go to the automatic validating machine.

You can update your Campuscard as soon as your re-registration has been successfully completed. You  can check your current re-registration status at any time in the course catalogue/LSF.

No, unfortunately this is not possible at the moment. The Campuscard can only be picked up and updated at ASH Berlin.

The semester pass is printed on the back of the card. There are always two semesters visible, so there is no cut-off date for the imprint. The new semester pass can be printed after re-registration. Here the semester pass is retained for the current semester.

Examples:

If the semester fee has been paid for the following semester, the card would have the following imprint:
01.10.xx - 31.03.xx Semestert. Berlin ABC
01.04.xx - 30.09.xx Semestert. Berlin ABC

If you have not paid for a semester pass:
01.10.xx - 31.03.xx Wintersemester
01.04.xx - 30.09.xx Sommersemester

If your semester fee (including the fee for the semester pass) has been received for the following semester and you have updated your card during the current semester, you can continue to use the semester pass.

The Campuscard includes a full-value studierendenWERK Berlin MensaCard. This can be used like a separate MensaCard. Information anonymity is secured by technical and organisational steps. The universities have no access to the MensaCard contents and studierendenWERK Berlin only knows the MensaCard number and no other personal data.

The Campuscard replaces the previous MensaCard. If you already have a MensaCard, please return it the next time you visit a studierendenWERK Berlin canteen. Any remaining balance on the MensaCard can be transferred to the Campuscard at the canteen checkout.

Attention: Note down the studierendenWERK number that is on the back! If you lose your Campuscard, please inform studierendenWERK Berlin of this number. The card's MensaCard function will then be blocked and the remaining amount on the lost card will be paid out to you.

If you neglected to write down the number and lost your Campuscard, please contact campuscard@ avoid-unrequested-mailsash-berlin.eu

No, it is still possible to use a separate studierendenWERK Berlin MensaCard.

You can have the balance transferred from your "old" MensaCard to the new Campuscard. When you return the "old" card, you will also get the 1.55 EUR deposit back. This can be done at any Mensa or canteen checkout and is very quick.

Important: If a so-called autoload agreement (topping up the MensaCard by direct debit) exists for an "old" card, then this agreement must be re-concluded for the Campuscard = new MensaCard. It is only valid for a specific MensaCard number and cannot be extended to others.

The Campuscard replaces the previous library card. Please register at the circulation desk of the library or via email

If you already have a library card, please contact the library team to have your library account converted. You can then return the library card to the library for disposal or dispose of it yourself in the residual waste.

Normally you will only receive a free Campuscard once. If the Campuscard is lost, stolen or defective, you can request a replacement from the Student Service Centre (regular students) or International Office (exchange students) for a fee of 12.00 EUR.

If your Campuscard is defective immediately after it is issued, you will receive a new Campuscard free of charge.

To prevent possible damage to your card (especially the thermal strip), using a protective sleeve is recommended.
