Financing options for your stay abroad

Funding is a decisive factor for every project abroad: How can I afford to spend several months abroad, possibly giving up my job and continuing to pay the rent in Berlin?

With the Erasmus+ (internship), Erasmus+ (study) and PROMOS programs, ASH Berlin offers financial support for projects abroad. On this page you will also find a list of non-university institutions that offer funding opportunities.

Further financing options

Important: Applications for further funding opportunities are not made via the International Office, but via the scholarship providers, foundations and institutions themselves.

Scholarships

In addition to domestic funding, students can also receive foreign allowances, tuition fees and travel expenses for studies or internships abroad via the Auslands-BAföG. This funding abroad can be combined with an Erasmus+ or PROMOS scholarship (current allowance: 300 euros). Furthermore, the Erasmus+ Social Top-Ups "Students with disabilities", "Students with chronic illness" and "Students with child(ren)" are not eligible for BAföG abroad.
As different regulations apply to the calculation of funding abroad, students who are not entitled to BAföG in Germany may also be eligible for funding. You can find a non-binding calculation option here.

Applications for BAföG abroad are not processed exclusively by the Studentenwerk Berlin, but by various BAföG offices in Germany, each of which is responsible for certain countries. The responsibilities of the offices can be viewed here .

Note: The application should be submitted to the responsible office at least 6-8 months before the planned stay abroad.
