Stay abroad with child(ren)

Of course, as a student with child(ren) you can also study abroad for one or two semesters or complete an internship abroad - the International Office will support you in this. Students who go abroad with child(ren) as part of the Erasmus+ program can also apply for additional special funding (see below).

What do I have to do as a parent?

You should inform us as early as possible, preferably already during the initial consultation, that you would like to take your child with you during your stay abroad. If you are planning to study abroad at one of our partner universities, we will be happy to give you general advice on choosing a place to study in order to find a university with a suitable infrastructure, as not all partner universities are equally attuned to students with children (e.g. with regard to childcare or halls of residence that offer suitable accommodation for students with children). It is also highly advisable to independently research the host institution's website to determine the extent to which childcare options exist at or near the study location. On the website Auslandsstudium-mit-Kind.de (German) you will find additional tips and experience reports of study stays with children.

What are the funding opportunities with Erasmus+?

When studying abroad with child(ren ), Erasmus+ grantees can apply for an additional 250 EUR per month, regardless of the number of children traveling with them. The duration of the additional funding depends on the number of financially supported months, excluding zero-grant periods.

For study abroad with child(ren ), a so-called "social top up" of 250 EUR/month can be applied for, which will be added to the regular Erasmus funding amount. For more information, please visit our Erasmus+ Study Abroad Scholarship website.

Real Cost Application

Students going on a study abroad mobility with child(ren) can apply for a real cost application for study abroad. A subsequent application is possible. Within this framework, a maximum of 15,000 EUR per semester and mobility or 30,000 EUR per academic year and mobility can be approved. At least 70% of the approved funds will be paid as a first installment before the start of the mobility.

In addition, students with child(ren) can apply for a real cost application for preparatory travel to inquire about local circumstances as preparation for an already approved mobility. Here, a maximum of 15,000 EUR per mobility can be approved.

Application procedure and deadlines

You should start planning an internship abroad with your child(ren) at an early stage. Ideally, you should plan this stay with us a year in advance. You should submit the complete application documents to the International Office at least 2 months before the start of the internship.

For a study abroad program, the application deadline for the following winter semester and the summer semester in the following year is 31.01. You can also apply for remaining places after this date . You can find all the information you need on our Study Abroad website. The application for the special funding within the framework of Erasmus+ will then only be made after the acceptance of the study place in the course of the regular scholarship awarding process.
