Berlin, December 20, 2023 : In January 2024, the Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin will present the Alice Salomon Award to Anna Csongor. With this award, the university honors personalities who have made outstanding contributions to the emancipation of women and the development of social work and, in a figurative sense, continue the work of Alice Salomon. The award is endowed with 6,000 euros. The designated award winner Anna Csongor is currently a retired lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest (ELTE) and Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees of the Autonómia Foundation.

About the prizewinner

Anna Csongor, born in 1951 in Budapest, Hungary, is an outstanding pioneer in social work, university lecturer and researcher. Her life's work is dedicated to promoting equal opportunities for Roma in Hungary and analyzing the interactions between poverty and education. Throughout her career, Anna Csongor has reconciled theory and practice and contributed significantly to the dissemination of community-based approaches.

Statement of the jury

The jury of the Alice Salomon Award particularly emphasizes that Anna Csongor was a key figure in the "Poverty and Roma" program of the Autonómia Foundation, the first independent foundation to initiate development programs for Roma and NGOs after the regime change in Hungary in 1990. Anna Csongor headed this foundation from 1995 to 2013.

The jury also recognizes Anna Csongor's decisive commitment and pioneering work against social, racial and ethnic discrimination - an endeavour that is becoming even more important against the backdrop of current political developments in Hungary. "Anna Csongor's educational, social work and academic work on social, racial and ethnic discrimination can be described as pioneering work on several levels: She was a pioneer in practical work with communities, in social work education, in practice research and in professional development. We consider the resulting practical and disciplinary knowledge, political experience and analysis of Anna Csongor to be very valuable for our learning and commitment," said the jury of the Alice Salomon Award.

The Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin sees Anna Csongor's Alice Salomon Award as a tribute to her lifelong commitment to equal rights, good living conditions and social participation of marginalized groups.

Award winner Anna Csongor: "The world urgently needs experts like Alice Salomon who are courageous and consistent, who are committed to eliminating social inequalities and who are able to act. It is an honor to receive the prize named after her."
